The company has long asked users to enable 2-step verification to boost account security. However, a majority of the users haven’t made the switch yet. With this in mind, Google is taking a more proactive approach to bolster the security of account owners. An extension of this feature will be to ask YouTube creators to enable 2-step verification on their accounts. We recently learned about YouTube’s plans to mandate this security standard for creators in the YouTube Partner Program. However, the streaming platform will allow people from outside the program to upload videos without 2SV.

Google also spoke about the sign-in enhancements, including the arrival of Google Identity Services and One Tap. The company said this feature “uses secure tokens, rather than passwords, to sign users into partner websites and apps, like Reddit and Pinterest.” Separately, the company is talking about Inactive Account Manager which deals with the decisions Google can take if you stop using your account or are unable to use it. The search giant noted that the devastating Colonial Pipeline cyber attack was caused by an inactive account. In May 2021, Google announced plans to mandate 2SV for all accounts in the future. It is now closing in on enabling the feature by default for a large bulk of its users. Google recently said it would spend $10 billion over a five-year period to ramp up cybersecurity. The company went on to say that it will improve open-source security protocols while also securing the software supply chain. The year 2021 has seen multiple instances of cyberattacks against major corporations. In August, a data breach exposed the personal information of 54 million T-Mobile consumers. Data including names, social security numbers, and addresses were reportedly accessed by this data breach. For its part, T-Mobile promised users 2 years of free access to McAfee ID Theft Protection. The carrier also announced new partnerships to improve the cybersecurity structure.
