Thankfully, Netflix does make that pretty easy to do. In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can turn on subtitles for each platform that Netflix is available on. Since it is different on some platforms versus others.
Which languages are Netflix subtitles available in?
Almost all languages are supported on Netflix for subtitles. However, there are a few that are not available. Like Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, or Vietnamese are not available on devices manufactured before 2014. Though at this point, most of us have new smartphones, computers and TVs so that’s not an issue. Netflix will not show you the entire list of subtitles languages that are available. Instead, Netflix will show the 5-7 most popular languages based on where you’re located. So here in the US, the languages we see are English, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. The Chinese language is a bit surprising actually, but nice to have.
How to change subtitles on Netflix – Smartphones & Web Browsers
First up, we’re going to show you how to change subtitles on your smartphone (through the Netflix app) or using a web browser on your computer. You’ll want to start a show or movie that you want to watch and see subtitles for. Then, tap on the screen to bring up the controls, or hover over the show or movie if you’re on desktop.
On the Netflix app: Tap on “Audio and Subtitles”. Then select the subtitles language you wish to see.On the Netflix website: Find the speech bubble and click on that. Then choose the subtitles language you want to see.
And that’s it. Now subtitles are on for everything you’ll watch on Netflix now. You can disable them again by following the same steps above and selecting “off”.
How to change subtitles on Netflix – TVs, set-top boxes, & gaming consoles
When it comes to streaming devices, TVs and gaming consoles, the Netflix app is set up a bit differently, but the same across these platforms. So here’s how you can turn on Netflix subtitles on those platforms. Open the Netflix app. Find movie or TV show you want to see subtitles for, but do not start it yet. On this next screen, you’ll see options like “Play”, “More Like This” and of course “Audio & Subtitles”. Tap on that.
From there, you can choose which subtitles you are going to see when you play this movie or TV show. And that’s it. That’s all there is to it. You can go back to the “Audio & Subtitles” page to turn them off as well.
